Marking and Making HERStory in March

Georgia State University centers and departments are commemorating HERStory during March, designated in the U.S. as Women’s History Month, alongside International Women’s Day on March 8.

Women’s History Month in the United States had its origins when Congress first passed legislation leading to “Women’s History Week” in 1982. Since 1995, U.S. presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating March as Women’s History Month, recognizing achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

On the world stage, International Women’s Day on March 8 is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also marking a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

Check out a list of events from the Multicultural Center through its Womxn’s HERStory Month celebrations, as well as other events and opportunities from other departments and units around the university.

More events can be submitted through the university calendar or through a contribution.

Notes from the Multicultural Center:

  • The term “womxn” is used by the Center as an inclusive term and spelling to validate individuals whose experiences exist beyond social norms of womanhood. With the inclusion of the Multicultural Center’s use of the spelling “womxn,” the Center aims to amplify the identities and experiences of women of color, transgender individuals, and individuals who are non-binary/non-conforming.
  • The Multicultural Center's Womxn's HERStory Month educational initiative aims to celebrate womxn while also raising awareness of sexism and trans-misogyny. In recognition of the International Women’s Day 2021 campaign theme: #ChooseToChallenge, all programs curated through collaborations between the MC and campus and community partners, will center womxn’s agency over their body and advocate for gender equality.
