Today is the International Women's Day (IWD), March 8, a global annual holiday recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women from all works of life. Particularly, it is when we are calling for awareness of and solutions to the gendered inequality and discrimination suffered by women. This year, UN set the theme as "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow", to appreciate the contributions of women leaders, "who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all".

Since 1911, International Women's Day has been celebrated for 111 years. On March 19, 1911, over one million men and women organized the rally for the first Women's Day in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Later in 1917, the date, March 8, was selected and formalized, when Russian women launched the protest for "bread and peace" amid the devastating disruptions and losses during World War I. In 1975, United Nations started to celebrate IWD, which thus became an international official holiday.

As a tradition, in March, Georgia State will also celebrate Women's History Month to honor women's contributions to our community. Check out a list of events from the Multicultural Center through its Womxn’s HERStory Month celebrations, as well as other events and opportunities from other departments and units around the university.
